Matthew Brennan

Iglesia de Guadalupe, Oaxaca, Mexico

I am a novelist, short and flash fiction writer, translator, screenwriter, and freelance editor based in the Pacific Northwest. Having begun my writing career in the fall of 2001, when I took my first workshop course at Colgate University, I’m approaching the twelve-year mark as a writer. I finished my BA in English/creative writing from Colgate in 2004, then earned my MFA in fiction from Arizona State University in 2010. Since then, I’ve published sixty works of short fiction in literary journals, and served on the editorial staff of three, including the Hayden’s Ferry Review.

This site is designed to share my work and career with you, and I will update the News and Publications pages as my career progresses. The Fiction page has a sample flash fiction posted, which I will periodically change, and the Translation page describes my partnership with Mexican poet Margarita Rios-Farjat and gives an example of our work. Margarita’s poems appeared for the first time in English last year.

On my blog here, I will be posting and archiving flash fictions, chapters and excerpts of new work, along with news about my writing career mixed with thoughts about the process. Check it out!

For the past four years, I have worked as a freelance editor with a variety of clients whose book manuscripts needed a detailed copyedit, or a draft that needed a book doctor to advise with the character, plot, structure, etc. My rates for these services are described on the Editing Services page. You can email me through the Contact page, where I also link to my blog sites.

Feel free to email me with any questions or comments about my work and services, I am always happy to hear from readers!
